ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities confiscated approximately 18 master cases of suspected smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of around P2.4 million during an anti-smuggling operation conducted in Paniran Block 8, Barangay Kasanyangan, officials reported.

According to authorities, the illegal tobacco products were discovered abandoned at the target area after operatives carried out the operation. However, no suspects were arrested as the individuals believed responsible for the shipment had already fled or left the contraband behind before law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene.

Operatives immediately secured the area and took custody of the recovered items for documentation and proper disposition. Initial findings indicated that the cigarettes were allegedly unregistered and illegally transported into the area without the payment of the required taxes and customs duties, in violation of trade and revenue regulations.

Authorities said the seizure forms part of the government’s continuing crackdown against smuggling activities in Western Mindanao, particularly the illegal entry and distribution of untaxed cigarettes that continue to affect legitimate businesses and deprive the government of substantial revenues.

Law enforcement agencies emphasized that intensified anti-smuggling operations are being carried out to curb the proliferation of contraband goods and dismantle syndicates involved in the illicit trade.

Investigators are now conducting a deeper probe to identify the individuals and groups behind the abandoned shipment, including determining the origin and intended distribution network of the smuggled cigarettes.

Officials reiterated their warning against involvement in smuggling operations, stressing that those found violating customs and tax laws will face appropriate criminal charges under existing Philippine laws.
