ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities seized more than half a million pesos worth of cigarettes and apprehended a suspect during a joint anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Divisoria, Zamboanga City, on June 7, 2026, as part of the government’s intensified campaign against illegal trade and other unlawful activities.

The operation was jointly conducted by the Zamboanga City Maritime Police Station, Headquarters Regional Maritime Unit 9 (HRMU9), 1st Special Operations Unit, and the 1st Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company following intelligence information provided by the Coastal Barangay Information Network regarding the alleged transport of tobacco products in the area.

According to authorities, operatives immediately launched a verification and interdiction operation after receiving the report. Upon arrival at the target location, law enforcement personnel caught an individual in the act of loading several boxes into a Mitsubishi Adventure vehicle.

When questioned, the individual reportedly failed to present the necessary documents and permits covering the transport and distribution of the tobacco products. The lack of proper documentation raised suspicion of possible violations related to the regulation and distribution of tobacco products, prompting authorities to seize the cargo and vehicle.

Confiscated during the operation were 475 reams of assorted cigarette brands, including Mighty Menthol, Fort Menthol, BOSQU, and Samson Mild. Based on an assessment by the Bureau of Customs, the seized products have an estimated market value of Php544,350.00.

The Mitsubishi Adventure used in the transport of the products was also impounded as part of the evidence.

Authorities subsequently brought the suspect, along with the confiscated cigarettes and vehicle, to the Headquarters Regional Maritime Unit 9 for proper documentation, inventory, and further legal proceedings.

Law enforcement officials said preparations are underway for the referral of the case to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), while awaiting official verification and evaluation from the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) regarding the authenticity and regulatory compliance of the seized products.

Police emphasized that the successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of strengthened inter-agency cooperation and intelligence-driven law enforcement efforts aimed at curbing smuggling and illicit trade activities that deprive the government of revenue and threaten legitimate businesses.

The operation also highlights the continued implementation of the Enhanced Managing Police Operations framework, one of the flagship programs under the Philippine National Police’s Focused Agenda.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to intensifying efforts against smuggling networks and other illegal activities that undermine the country’s economy and public welfare.

“This operation underscores the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies to protect the nation’s economic interests and uphold the rule of law,” police officials said, adding that anti-smuggling initiatives will remain a priority under the PNP’s vision of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman.”

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin, ownership, and intended destination of the seized tobacco products, as well as to identify other individuals who may be involved in the alleged illegal operation.
