ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities intercepted nearly ₱4 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a joint anti-smuggling operation in Zamboanga City on Sunday evening, June 7, as law enforcement agencies intensified efforts to curb illicit trade and protect the country’s economic security.

The operation, conducted along Lustre Drive in Barangay Sta. Catalina, resulted in the seizure of a blue Mazda minivan loaded with assorted cigarette products believed to have been transported in violation of customs laws and regulations.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the vehicle, which was found without a license plate, was flagged by operatives during the coordinated enforcement action. However, upon noticing the presence of authorities, the driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot toward a nearby area.

Law enforcement personnel launched an immediate pursuit, but the suspect successfully evaded arrest by taking advantage of the terrain and limited visibility in the area.

The successful operation was jointly carried out by personnel from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–Zamboanga City Field Unit (CIDG-ZCFU), the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Region IX, and the Zamboanga City Police Station 11. Authorities said the operation highlights the continued collaboration among government agencies in strengthening border security and combating illegal trade activities in the region.

A thorough inspection of the abandoned minivan revealed multiple boxes and reams of cigarettes suspected to have been smuggled into the country. The contraband, along with the vehicle used in the transport operation, was immediately turned over to the Bureau of Customs Regional Office IX for proper inventory, examination, and legal disposition.

Authorities estimated the total value of the confiscated cigarettes and vehicle at nearly ₱4 million, underscoring the significant scale of the attempted illicit transport.

Investigators are now working to identify and locate the suspect who escaped during the operation. Law enforcement agencies are also conducting further investigations to determine whether the shipment is linked to a larger smuggling network operating within or outside the region.

The operation forms part of the PNP’s intensified campaign against smuggling and other illegal activities under its Focused Agenda, particularly through the Enhanced Managing Police Operations program, which emphasizes intelligence-driven and coordinated law enforcement actions nationwide.

The PNP reiterated its commitment to sustaining aggressive anti-smuggling operations and strengthening inter-agency cooperation to protect national interests, safeguard government revenues, and ensure compliance with customs and trade laws.

Officials emphasized that efforts against smuggling remain a critical component of maintaining economic stability and national security, in line with the vision of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman.”
