Several areas in Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms on Wednesday, March 11, as the trough of a tropical depression affects parts of the island, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its regional weather forecast issued at 5:00 a.m., PAGASA’s Mindanao Regional Services Division said Northern Mindanao, the Caraga Region, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi are expected to experience cloudy conditions with scattered rains and thunderstorms throughout the day due to the trough of the tropical depression.

Weather forecasters warned that moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall in these areas could trigger flash floods or landslides, especially in flood-prone and mountainous communities.

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms. PAGASA said these conditions may still produce sudden heavy downpours that could lead to localized flooding or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Strong Winds, Rough Seas in Eastern Mindanao

The weather bureau also warned of moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to north over the eastern section of Mindanao. These winds are expected to generate moderate to rough seas ranging from 2.5 to 3.4 meters.

Fisherfolk and small sea vessels are advised to exercise caution when venturing out to sea, particularly along the eastern coastal waters.

In contrast, the rest of Mindanao will experience light to moderate winds coming from the northeast, with slight to moderate sea conditions ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.

Rainy Conditions in Northern Mindanao and Caraga

Several provinces in Northern Mindanao—including Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental—will experience cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms during the early part of the forecast period.

Temperatures in these areas are expected to range between 20°C and 28°C in Bukidnon and 22°C to 27°C in Misamis Occidental, before slightly warming later in the day as conditions shift to partly cloudy skies with occasional rain showers.

In the Caraga Region, provinces such as Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands will also see cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms throughout much of the forecast period. Winds in these areas are forecast to remain moderate to strong, with coastal waters expected to be moderate to rough.

Mixed Weather in Davao Region

In the Davao Region, Davao Oriental and Davao de Oro will experience cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms brought by the trough of the tropical depression. Winds in these provinces will range from moderate to strong, with coastal waters expected to be moderate to rough.

Other areas in the region—including Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Occidental—will generally have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures across the region are expected to range from 22°C to 32°C.

Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN to See Isolated Rains

Provinces in the Zamboanga Peninsula—including Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga City—as well as Isabela City will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with occasional rain showers or thunderstorms.

Temperatures in these areas will range from 22°C to 34°C, with light to moderate northeast winds and slight to moderate coastal sea conditions.

Similarly, provinces in SOCCSKSARGEN—North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani—will experience generally fair weather with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

BARMM Areas Under Rainy Skies

In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Sulu and Tawi-Tawi are forecast to experience cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, while Basilan, Cotabato City, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with occasional rain showers.

Temperatures across BARMM areas will range between 20°C and 33°C.

Public Advisory

PAGASA advised residents in areas experiencing persistent rainfall to remain alert for possible flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying and mountainous communities.

The weather bureau also urged fisherfolk and small boat operators to monitor weather updates and exercise caution due to potentially rough sea conditions in parts of Mindanao.
