MAGPET, Cotabato — A construction worker has died after being buried alive by collapsing soil while working on a residential construction project in Barangay Pangao-an, Magpet, Cotabato, on Friday, February 6, 2026.

The victim was identified as Allan Lasib, of legal age, a resident of Barangay Manobisa in Magpet, and employed as a construction worker at the site. According to initial reports, Lasib was tying steel bars or “kabilya” at the lower portion of the structure when the soil beside the excavation suddenly gave way. The unexpected collapse trapped him underneath the earth and construction materials, leaving him unable to escape.
Witnesses said the incident happened in a matter of seconds, catching workers off guard. Upon hearing Lasib’s cries, his co-workers immediately rushed to his aid. Using shovels and their bare hands, they desperately dug through the soil in an effort to rescue him. After several tense minutes, they were able to pull him out from the debris.
However, when Lasib was recovered, he was already unconscious and bleeding from his mouth and nose—clear signs of severe internal injuries. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Kidapawan City for emergency treatment. Doctors initially described his condition as critical due to breathing difficulties and serious injuries to his chest and body.
Despite medical efforts, Lasib later succumbed to his injuries, authorities confirmed.
According to the project’s foreman, the area was undergoing excavation in preparation for a retaining wall meant to prevent soil erosion. However, the ground reportedly became unstable during the digging process, eventually leading to the collapse. The incident highlights the dangers faced by construction workers, particularly in sites located on sloping or loose terrain.
The owner of the house under construction has expressed willingness to assist the victim’s family, including help with medical and funeral expenses.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether proper safety measures were in place at the site. They are also reminding contractors and construction workers to strictly follow occupational safety standards, especially in high-risk areas prone to soil erosion and landslides.
Officials stressed that regular soil assessment, proper reinforcement, and protective structures are essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Meanwhile, Lasib’s family is mourning his sudden death, describing him as a hardworking breadwinner who was only trying to provide for his loved ones. Community members have also expressed sympathy and called for stronger enforcement of construction safety regulations to ensure that no more lives are lost to preventable accidents.
