Residents across Mindanao can expect another day of partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms, as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continues to monitor weather conditions affecting the island.

According to the Regional Weather Forecast issued by PAGASA’s Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) at 5:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17, the forecast remains valid until 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18.

While no tropical cyclone or low-pressure area is directly affecting Mindanao, localized thunderstorms driven by daytime heating and moisture-laden winds are expected to develop across various provinces. PAGASA warned that these thunderstorms could become severe enough to trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying, flood-prone, and mountainous communities.

Rainfall Expected Across All Mindanao Regions

The weather bureau said nearly the entire island—including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga Region, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM)—will experience intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms throughout the forecast period.

The affected areas include:

  • Zamboanga Peninsula: Zamboanga City, Isabela City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay.
  • Northern Mindanao: Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental.
  • Davao Region: Davao City (Metro Davao), Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental.
  • SOCCSKSARGEN: North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani.
  • Caraga Region: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands.
  • BARMM: Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

Most areas will experience light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to south, while coastal waters will remain slight to moderate, with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters. Sea conditions are generally favorable for most fishing and small maritime activities, although PAGASA advised mariners to remain cautious whenever thunderstorms develop, as strong winds and rougher seas may occur suddenly.

Warm and Humid Conditions Continue

Temperatures across Mindanao are expected to remain warm despite intermittent rains.

The coolest temperatures are forecast over the highlands of Bukidnon at 19°C, while Lanao del Sur may experience lows of 21°C. Meanwhile, the hottest daytime temperatures could reach 35°C in Zamboanga del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, and other parts of northern and eastern Mindanao.

Most urban centers—including Davao City, Zamboanga City, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato City, and neighboring provinces—are expected to record daytime highs ranging between 30°C and 33°C, accompanied by high humidity that may increase the heat index.

Thunderstorms May Intensify During the Afternoon and Evening

PAGASA noted that although rainfall is expected to be isolated rather than widespread, localized thunderstorms may rapidly intensify during the afternoon and evening due to intense daytime heating.

These thunderstorms could bring:

  • Brief but heavy rainfall;
  • Frequent lightning;
  • Strong, gusty winds; and
  • Reduced visibility for motorists.

Communities near rivers, creeks, mountain slopes, and areas with a history of flooding or landslides are advised to closely monitor weather updates and heed advisories from local disaster risk reduction and management offices.

Motorists are likewise urged to exercise caution when traveling during periods of heavy rain, as roads may become slippery and visibility may be significantly reduced.

Public Advisory

PAGASA encourages residents throughout Mindanao to remain weather-aware, particularly during the afternoon and evening when thunderstorms are more likely to develop. Fisherfolk, farmers, commuters, and those planning outdoor activities should monitor the latest weather bulletins and prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions.

While no major weather disturbance is currently affecting the island, localized thunderstorms remain capable of producing hazardous conditions in isolated areas, making vigilance essential over the next 24 hours.
