MATALAM, North Cotabato — A female Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) from North Cotabato is currently confined in a hospital in Kuwait after allegedly being forced to flee her employer due to a worsening medical condition that was reportedly ignored despite repeated pleas for help.

The worker was identified as Erlinda Alvarado Tura, also known as Erlinda Barrientos Tura, a resident of Barangay Estado in Matalam, North Cotabato, who has been working as a domestic helper in Kuwait.

According to information gathered, Tura began experiencing severe breathing difficulties while carrying out her duties. Despite her deteriorating health, she was allegedly required by her employer to continue working even as her condition worsened.

Reports further indicated that Tura sought assistance from her local recruitment agency and informed them about her medical condition. However, instead of receiving immediate help, she was allegedly dismissed and told that she was merely “acting up” or exaggerating her illness.

As her health continued to decline and fearing for her safety, Tura reportedly decided to escape from her employer’s residence as a last resort. She then sought assistance from the Migrant Workers Office (MWO), formerly known as the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait.

Upon learning of her situation, Philippine government authorities in Kuwait immediately intervened and facilitated her transfer to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Medical examinations reportedly revealed a serious condition involving the accumulation of fluid in her lungs. Tura is currently undergoing treatment and has undergone a medical procedure to remove the fluid, a critical step aimed at improving her breathing and stabilizing her condition.

The incident has raised concerns over the welfare and protection of Filipino migrant workers abroad, particularly those who may be suffering from illnesses while under the care of foreign employers. It also highlights the importance of prompt response mechanisms from recruitment agencies and labor authorities when OFWs seek assistance.

Meanwhile, Tura’s family in North Cotabato continues to closely monitor her condition and is hoping for her full recovery and safe return to the Philippines.

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding her medical diagnosis, while efforts are reportedly ongoing to ensure that she receives the necessary support and assistance during her recovery in Kuwait.
