MAGALLANES, Agusan del Norte — Authorities confiscated approximately P5.4 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested five individuals during an anti-smuggling operation conducted by the Police Regional Office-13 (PRO-13) in Barangay Caloc-an, Magallanes, Agusan del Norte on June 15.

The successful operation stemmed from information provided by vigilant residents who reported the suspicious arrival of a motorized boat that quietly docked along the coastal area of the barangay and unloaded boxes believed to contain contraband goods.
Acting swiftly on the tip, personnel of the Magallanes Municipal Police Station (MPS) proceeded to the area and caught five individuals in the act of transferring the cargo from the boat onto a waiting vehicle. However, crew members aboard the motorized vessel managed to flee before authorities could apprehend them.
Police identified the arrested suspects through their aliases as “Al,” 19, a resident of Zamboanga del Sur; “Zor,” 20, from Bohol; “Mac,” 23; “Ren,” 39; and “Joe,” 50, both residents of Cagayan de Oro City.
During inspection and verification procedures, the suspects reportedly failed to present any documents proving the lawful ownership, transport, or possession of the cigarette products.
Authorities seized a total of 400 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes, consisting of 84 boxes of Cannon Menthol, 30 boxes of Champion Assorted, 59 boxes of Castorce, 28 boxes of Green Hill, and 199 boxes of Green cigarettes.
The confiscated products carry an estimated market value of P5.4 million, making it one of the significant anti-smuggling operations conducted in the region this year.
In addition to the contraband, authorities also impounded a Mitsubishi Canter closed van believed to have been intended for transporting the illegal goods to their destination.
The seized cigarettes and vehicle are now under the custody of the Magallanes MPS pending the filing of appropriate criminal charges against the arrested individuals. Authorities said the suspects may face charges for violations of laws governing the possession, transport, and distribution of smuggled cigarette products, including provisions under Republic Act No. 10643, also known as the Graphic Health Warnings Law.
Meanwhile, investigators have launched a deeper probe to trace the origin of the contraband shipment, identify the individuals who escaped aboard the motorized boat, and uncover the network behind the smuggling operation.
Police Regional Office-13 Regional Director Marcial Mariano P. Magistrado IV commended the operating personnel and the concerned citizens whose timely information led to the successful interception of the illegal shipment.
He emphasized that PRO-13 remains committed to intensifying its campaign against smuggling and other illicit activities that threaten legitimate businesses, deprive the government of revenues, and endanger public welfare.
“This successful operation demonstrates the importance of community cooperation and the vigilance of our law enforcement personnel. We will continue to strengthen our efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and hold those involved accountable under the law,” Magistrado said.
Authorities are urging the public to continue reporting suspicious activities as part of the government’s ongoing drive to combat smuggling and other transnational crimes in the Caraga Region.
