MANOLO FORTICH, Bukidnon — A 19-year-old male was found dead inside his home on the morning of April 21, 2026, in what authorities believe to be a case of suicide, underscoring growing concerns over mental health struggles among young Filipinos.

The victim, identified only as “Rico,” a resident of Street J, Purok Bulls, Camp Phillips in Barangay Agusan Canyon, was discovered lifeless at around 9:00 a.m. inside his residence.
Initial police investigation revealed that hours before the incident, Rico had been drinking with his girlfriend and a friend at his home. The gathering reportedly ended around 5:00 a.m., after which all of them went to sleep. At some point before the incident, the victim allegedly took a tablet of medication.
According to his girlfriend, Rico had previously attempted to take his own life—an alarming detail that points to a possible history of emotional or psychological distress.
Authorities said no signs of foul play were found at the scene, strengthening the likelihood that the death was self-inflicted. However, a full investigation is ongoing to establish all circumstances surrounding the incident.
A Growing Mental Health Crisis
This tragedy has once again brought attention to the urgent need to address mental health issues, particularly among the youth. Depression and other mental health conditions often remain unseen and untreated, especially in communities where stigma, lack of access to services, and limited awareness persist.
Mental health professionals emphasize that depression is a serious medical condition, not a weakness or something that can simply be overcome without support. Warning signs may include withdrawal from loved ones, drastic mood changes, feelings of hopelessness, or previous attempts at self-harm—many of which, according to reports, may have been present in this case.

Authorities and advocates are calling on families, friends, and communities to be more vigilant and compassionate toward individuals who may be silently struggling.
