ILIGAN CITY — Authorities intercepted more than ₱2.1 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes in an early morning anti-smuggling operation along a national highway in Barangay Acmac, reinforcing intensified efforts to curb illicit trade in Northern Mindanao.

The operation, conducted at around 1:20 a.m. on April 19, was led by the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) under Officer-in-Charge Aaron M. Mandia. Personnel from the City Intelligence Unit–City Special Operations Unit (CIU-CSOU), headed by Clyde E. Cajocson, served as the lead unit in the coordinated law enforcement effort.
The operation was carried out in close coordination with the Regional Intelligence Division 10, Task Force Iligan, the Iligan City Mobile Force Company, and Police Station 3 led by Rorye V. Tabuclin.
Police flagged down a white Toyota Hiace van bearing Plate No. 101704, which was reportedly able to pass through the Triton Border Control Point prior to the interception. Upon inspection, authorities discovered multiple boxes of “Modern” brand cigarettes in plain view inside the vehicle.
The occupants failed to present the required documents for the transport and distribution of the tobacco products, prompting authorities to confiscate the items for violations of Republic Act No. 10863 and relevant provisions of the National Internal Revenue Code.
Seized during the operation were 53 boxes of cigarettes with an estimated retail value of ₱2,120,000. Law enforcement personnel immediately marked, inventoried, and photographed the confiscated goods at the scene in the presence of mandated witnesses, ensuring compliance with legal procedures.
The confiscated items are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper documentation and safekeeping. Meanwhile, the individuals involved were temporarily released pending further adjudication and appropriate proceedings by the agency.
Police officials emphasized that the successful operation highlights strengthened intelligence coordination and vigilance against smuggling activities, which continue to deprive the government of revenue and undermine legitimate businesses.
The ICPO reiterated its commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against illegal trade, stressing that law enforcement agencies will remain steadfast in protecting public interest and upholding the rule of law.
