ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte – Authorities intercepted ₱660,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during an anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Dalipuga, Iligan City, in the early hours of July 18, 2026, dealing another blow to the illegal tobacco trade in Northern Mindanao.

The operation was jointly conducted by personnel of the Iligan City Police Station 3, Iligan City Mobile Force Company, and Task Force Iligan, who successfully flagged down a KIA Bongo suspected of transporting contraband.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered 825 reams of “CANNON” brand cigarettes concealed beneath a load of dehusked coconuts, an apparent attempt to evade law enforcement inspection and disguise the illegal shipment.

Investigators said the driver failed to present the required documents proving the legality of the cargo, including a Bureau of Customs (BOC) clearance, importation documents, and the mandatory tax stamps required for imported tobacco products.

As a result, law enforcement officers confiscated both the suspected smuggled cigarettes and the vehicle used to transport them.

The seized contraband, with an estimated market value of ₱660,000, will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and further investigation. Meanwhile, the driver was temporarily released pending the completion of the Bureau of Customs’ legal and administrative proceedings to determine accountability and identify the individuals or syndicates behind the shipment.

Authorities are also investigating the origin and intended destination of the cigarettes to determine whether the shipment is linked to a larger smuggling network operating in the region.

The operation forms part of the intensified anti-smuggling campaign of the Police Regional Office 10 (PRO-10), which continues to coordinate closely with partner agencies to curb the entry and distribution of untaxed and illegally imported products that deprive the government of revenue and undermine legitimate businesses.

PRO-10 also urged the public to remain vigilant and support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious transportation, storage, or sale of contraband goods. Police emphasized that community cooperation remains a vital component in protecting the country’s economy, ensuring fair trade, and preventing illegal products from reaching local markets.

The successful seizure highlights the continuing commitment of authorities to strengthen border security and disrupt the operations of smuggling groups attempting to move contraband through Northern Mindanao.
