PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — Government forces intercepted an estimated ₱37.8 million worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes in a high-impact seaborne operation off the coastal waters of Barangay Kawit on March 18, underscoring intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal maritime trade in the province.

Troops from the 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion of the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division carried out the patrol after receiving information about a motorized boat suspected of transporting contraband. The operation resulted in the successful interception of the vessel and the seizure of 660 cases of cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled into the country.

Authorities said the confiscated items were immediately turned over to the Bureau of Customs sub-station in Zamboanga del Sur for proper documentation, tagging, and inventory, in line with established procedures for handling seized goods.

Officials noted that the scale of the recovery highlights the persistent threat of illicit trade along coastal routes, which continues to undermine government revenues and distort fair market competition. The operation forms part of a broader campaign to secure maritime borders and disrupt smuggling networks operating in southern Philippines waters.

The military credited the success of the mission to strong inter-agency coordination, involving the Philippine Army, the Philippine National Police, the Bureau of Customs, and other law enforcement partners, alongside support from local communities.

“This operation reflects our continuing commitment to safeguard our coastal areas and support law enforcement efforts against illegal activities,” a military official said, emphasizing that vigilance at sea remains critical to protecting both economic stability and public order.

The 53rd Infantry Battalion reiterated its resolve to sustain security operations across Zamboanga del Sur, particularly in vulnerable coastal zones often exploited by smugglers. Authorities also urged the public to remain alert and report suspicious maritime movements as part of a collective effort to defend territorial integrity.

The seizure adds to a growing list of anti-smuggling accomplishments in the region, reinforcing the government’s stance that coordinated enforcement and community involvement are key to curbing illicit trade.
