LUUK, Sulu — Sustained peace and security efforts in this conflict-affected municipality gained further ground after a high-powered firearm was voluntarily surrendered during the declaration of Barangay Niog-Niog as a gun-free and peace-centered community on March 20, 2026.

An M1 Caliber .30 Garand rifle was formally handed over by a resident in a symbolic and significant act of cooperation, underscoring the growing trust of local communities in government-led peace initiatives.

Lt. Col. Dante E. Mantes, Commanding Officer of the 101st Infantry “Sajahitra” Battalion, said the voluntary surrender—facilitated by Barangay Chairperson Hajirna L. Habibulla and carried out in coordination with the Luuk Municipal Police Station—reflects the community’s active role in advancing peace and order at the grassroots level.

He emphasized that compliance with gun-free policies is critical in preventing potential armed conflicts, strengthening public safety, and fostering a culture of accountability and non-violence among residents.

“This development shows that our communities are not only receptive but are actively participating in building a safer environment,” Mantes said, noting that local leadership plays a vital role in encouraging residents to support disarmament efforts.

Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino P. Delos Santos, Commander of the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade, lauded the initiative as a strong indication of deepening collaboration between security forces and civilian communities. He said the voluntary handover enhances coordination with municipal authorities and contributes to long-term stability in the province.

“The success of this initiative demonstrates that peacebuilding is most effective when it is shared by both the Armed Forces and the people,” Delos Santos said.

For his part, Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, Commander of Joint Task Force Orion and the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division, stressed that each surrendered firearm directly contributes to the broader mission of reducing the proliferation of loose firearms in Sulu.

He highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation among the military, local government units, and residents in achieving lasting peace.

“Every firearm turned over is a step closer to safer communities. Continued collaboration is key to preventing violence and resolving long-standing conflicts,” Peña said.

The declaration of Barangay Niog-Niog as a gun-free and peace-centered community marks another milestone in Sulu’s ongoing peacebuilding efforts, where voluntary disarmament and strong community engagement remain central strategies.

Authorities said such initiatives are crucial in addressing security challenges in the province, demonstrating that lasting peace is attainable through trust, cooperation, and collective action at the local level.
