PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — Government troops from the 53rd “Matapat” Infantry Battalion intercepted a large shipment of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a predawn operation in Barangay White Beach, Pagadian City, preventing what authorities believe was an ongoing illegal distribution activity.

The operation was carried out at around 1:00 a.m., when soldiers discovered numerous boxes of cigarettes bearing the brands Fort and Berlin, which are believed to have been smuggled into the country through maritime routes.
According to initial reports, the contraband was allegedly being prepared for loading onto two vehicles for delivery to undisclosed destinations when military personnel moved in and disrupted the operation at a crucial moment.
Authorities suspect that the shipment had been transported by sea before reaching the coastal area of Barangay White Beach, a route often monitored due to concerns over smuggling activities.
All confiscated cigarettes have been placed under government custody for proper documentation, inventory, and further investigation. Law enforcement agencies are now working to identify the individuals and groups responsible for the alleged smuggling operation and determine the full extent of the network involved.
Military officials emphasized that the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the entry and distribution of illicit goods in the region.
“The successful operation demonstrates the continuing commitment of the Philippine Army and partner agencies to protect communities from illegal activities that deprive the government of revenue and undermine legitimate businesses,” authorities said.
Coordination with other government agencies is also being intensified to prevent further smuggling operations and to strengthen monitoring of coastal entry points in Pagadian City and nearby areas.
The value of the seized cigarettes has yet to be determined pending a complete inventory and assessment by concerned authorities.
Investigations are ongoing.
