PANTAR, Lanao del Norte — Police personnel from the Pantar Municipal Police Station (MPS) successfully intercepted an estimated ₱312,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes during a border checkpoint operation in Barangay Campong at around 2:30 a.m. on February 12, 2026.

Vehicle Flagged Down During Early Morning Operation
Authorities were conducting routine checkpoint operations when they flagged down a blue Toyota Vios for inspection. The vehicle was driven by a 41-year-old married man from Tubod, Iligan City, with a 23-year-old male passenger, a construction worker and resident of Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur.
Upon inspection, police officers discovered suspected smuggled cigarettes placed openly on both the front and back seats of the vehicle. When asked to present documents proving the legality of the goods, the driver failed to provide any valid permits or receipts.
Hidden Cargo Found Inside Vehicle Compartment
Further examination of the vehicle revealed that its compartment was also loaded with large quantities of cigarettes believed to have been illegally transported. The discovery indicated a deliberate attempt to distribute the contraband through land routes in the province.
Police seized a total of 390 reams of cigarettes, consisting of 341 reams of Modern brand and 49 reams of Canon brand. The confiscated items were estimated to have a market value of ₱312,000.
Suspects in Custody, Evidence Secured
Both the driver and his passenger were immediately taken into custody and are currently being held at the Pantar MPS for further investigation and documentation. The vehicle used in the transport of the smuggled goods was also impounded as part of the case.
Authorities confirmed that the seized cigarettes will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC)–Iligan City for proper disposition, in accordance with existing laws and regulations on smuggling and illegal trade.
Police Commend Vigilance of Checkpoint Teams
PCOL Leo De Leon Sua, Acting Provincial Director of the Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office (LDNPPO), commended the personnel involved in the successful operation. He attributed the interception to the unit’s intensified checkpoint strategy and heightened alertness.
“This successful interdiction is a direct result of our heightened vigilance and strategic operations. LDNPPO remains unwavering in its commitment to combat illegal activities that threaten our community’s security and economy,” Sua said.
Intensified Campaign Against Smuggling
The seizure highlights the continuing efforts of local police units to curb smuggling and protect legitimate businesses from unfair competition. Authorities reiterated that checkpoints will remain active, especially along known transit routes, to prevent the entry and distribution of illegal goods.
Police also urged the public to report suspicious activities in their communities, emphasizing that cooperation between law enforcement and citizens is vital in strengthening the campaign against illegal trade.
