Authorities intercepted a large shipment of smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation in Pantar. Lanao del Norte on May 4, 2026, underscoring the government’s intensified campaign against illegal trade in the region.

Personnel on duty flagged down a vehicle carrying a total of 1,096 reams of cigarettes that were found to be lacking the required government health warning labels. The shipment, estimated to be worth ₱876,800, was immediately confiscated after the driver failed to present the necessary permits and documentation.
Three individuals were apprehended during the operation and were subsequently brought to the local police station for proper documentation and investigation. Authorities have yet to release their identities pending the filing of appropriate charges.
The seized contraband will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition in accordance with existing laws and regulations governing smuggled goods.
Law enforcement agencies reiterated their commitment to sustaining checkpoint operations and intelligence-driven efforts aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal cigarettes, which not only deprive the government of tax revenues but also pose risks to public health.
Officials emphasized that intensified anti-smuggling initiatives are crucial in safeguarding economic stability and ensuring that only regulated products reach consumers.
