ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities seized approximately five kilograms of suspected marijuana allegedly shipped through a courier company in Zamboanga City during a joint interdiction operation conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The suspected illegal drugs were discovered during the operation involving personnel from the Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) and PDEA Zamboanga City Office (PDEA-ZCO). The shipment was reportedly intercepted at a courier facility in the city after authorities conducted a security inspection.
PDEA personnel used a K9 detection dog to identify the package suspected of containing illegal drugs. The subsequent inspection led to the recovery of approximately five kilograms of suspected marijuana.
Authorities placed the estimated current market value of the seized suspected marijuana at approximately ₱600,000.
The operation underscores the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies to prevent illegal drugs from being transported through legitimate delivery and courier networks. Drug traffickers have increasingly exploited commercial logistics and parcel delivery services to move illegal substances from one location to another, making intelligence-led interdiction and K9-assisted inspections an important part of enforcement operations.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified the sender or the intended recipient of the intercepted shipment.
PDEA and police investigators are now working to determine where the suspected marijuana originated, who arranged for its shipment, and who was supposed to receive the package.
The seized substance will be subjected to the appropriate laboratory examination and documentation as part of the ongoing investigation and possible filing of charges against those found responsible.
Authorities also emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that the identities of individuals who may be connected to the shipment should not be presumed until sufficient evidence is established.
The seizure is another indication of the continuing challenge faced by law enforcement in stopping the movement of illegal drugs through courier and other commercial transportation channels, particularly as traffickers attempt to conceal contraband among ordinary parcels.
PDEA and the PNP are expected to pursue leads that could identify the network behind the shipment, including its source and intended recipient.
