SAN ISIDRO, Surigao del Norte — Two foreign tourists were swept away by strong waves while swimming at a surfing area in Barangay Pacifico, San Isidro, Siargao Island on Tuesday, but were swiftly rescued by alert and courageous local surfers, preventing what could have been a tragic incident.

According to witnesses, the two foreigners were swimming near the middle of the surfing spot when powerful waves suddenly pulled them farther from shore. The tourists reportedly became overconfident, believing they could manage the conditions because they knew how to swim. However, the strong current and wave action quickly overpowered them.

Seeing the tourists in distress, several surfers immediately paddled out using their surfboards and rescued the two individuals, bringing them back to safety. Thanks to their quick response and presence of mind, the tourists were recovered unharmed.

Local residents and netizens praised the bravery and vigilance of the surfers, particularly Lansoy Buhangin Ybanez, Rodel Dulpina, and Marjone Longos, whose timely action helped avert a possible drowning incident.

The incident highlights the hidden dangers of swimming in surfing zones, especially for visitors unfamiliar with local sea conditions. While Siargao is globally known for its world-class waves, experts stress that its beauty also comes with risks that should never be underestimated.

Authorities and community members once again call on tourists to prioritize safety and respect local advisories to avoid similar incidents in the future.
