SOCORRO, Surigao del Norte — Caraga Region welcomed another milestone in its growing cruise tourism industry on Saturday, July 4, as the M/V Heritage Adventurer arrived in the island paradise of Bucas Grande, Socorro, Surigao del Norte, carrying international passengers eager to explore one of the Philippines’ most celebrated ecotourism destinations.

The arrival of the expedition cruise vessel, facilitated by the Department of Tourism (DOT)–Caraga Region, underscores the region’s increasing recognition as an emerging destination in the Philippine cruise tourism circuit and highlights continuing efforts to position Caraga as a world-class ecotourism hub for international travelers.

Visitors from various countries embarked on an immersive journey through Bucas Grande’s renowned natural attractions, offering them an opportunity to experience the island’s pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity, and the warmth of Filipino hospitality that has become synonymous with Philippine tourism.

Before the cruise passengers set foot on the island, local tourism stakeholders ensured that preparations were in place to provide a safe, organized, and memorable experience.

Local tour guides underwent a comprehensive orientation led by Oliver Baronday, Operations Manager of the Sohoton Reception Center. The briefing emphasized visitor safety, proper guest handling protocols, and quality tourism services while reinforcing the importance of welcoming guests with the country’s signature “Mabuhay!” spirit.

The training aimed to equip frontline tourism workers with the skills needed to deliver meaningful cultural exchanges and exceptional visitor experiences, reflecting Caraga’s commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism.

Security and safety remained top priorities throughout the cruise call.

Personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard Sub-Station Doña Helene and the Socorro Tourist Police were strategically deployed to ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of the activity, providing security assistance and immediate response capabilities whenever necessary.

The DOT said its continued support for cruise tourism initiatives forms part of broader efforts to attract more international cruise vessels to Caraga while promoting the region’s exceptional natural landscapes, vibrant culture, and community-based tourism experiences.

Officials noted that cruise tourism not only enhances the country’s visibility in the global travel market but also creates economic opportunities for local communities through increased demand for tour guiding services, transportation, food, handicrafts, and other tourism-related enterprises.

Bucas Grande has long been recognized as one of Caraga’s crown jewels, drawing nature lovers from around the world with its crystal-clear waters, limestone formations, lush mangrove forests, hidden lagoons, caves, and diverse marine ecosystems.

The island is home to the world-famous Sohoton Cove, where visitors can experience kayaking through emerald waterways, explore enchanting caves, and encounter the area’s unique natural attractions that have made Surigao del Norte one of Mindanao’s premier ecotourism destinations.

The successful arrival of the M/V Heritage Adventurer further demonstrates the growing confidence of international expedition cruise operators in Caraga’s tourism readiness and destination management capabilities.

Following its exploration of Bucas Grande’s spectacular natural wonders, the expedition vessel is scheduled to continue its voyage to Indonesia, carrying with it unforgettable memories of Caraga’s breathtaking scenery, rich biodiversity, and the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Filipino people.

As more international cruise ships include Caraga in their itineraries, tourism officials remain optimistic that the region will continue to gain global recognition, helping drive sustainable economic growth while preserving the natural and cultural treasures that make Bucas Grande a truly world-class destination.
