Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur – June 24, 2025 — A tragic accident unfolded in Brgy. El Paraiso, La Libertad, Zamboanga del Norte, after a rescue truck owned by the local government of Dumingag carrying 17 people—16 passengers and the driver—plunged into the Dapitan River while crossing a flooded spillway.

According to initial reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to the strong current, causing the truck to fall into the river. The incident claimed the lives of four individuals—two were declared dead on arrival at a medical facility, while two more bodies were recovered during ongoing search and rescue operations.
Swift response came from personnel of the La Libertad Municipal Police Station, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Bureau of Fire Protection-La Libertad, the Rural Health Unit (RHU), and civilian volunteers. Their immediate and coordinated efforts helped rescue the remaining passengers and retrieve the deceased.
Rescuers faced difficult conditions during the operation. Strong currents and limited visibility posed significant risks, but their determination and teamwork helped ensure that survivors were given immediate aid and that no one was left behind.
“This rescue wasn’t easy. It took courage, coordination, and compassion from everyone on the ground,” a responder shared. “But every life saved makes the effort worth it.”
Local officials and community members are calling for continued prayers for the souls of the deceased and strength for the grieving families. They also urged the public to prioritize safety and avoid crossing spillways during adverse weather.
“Nature gives no warnings, only consequences. Life is fragile. Let’s protect it at all cost,” a local statement said.
The municipality extends its deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and continues to monitor conditions in the area for any further safety advisories.
