Education has the power to break barriers, uplift communities, and transform lives. For many young individuals, financial constraints often stand in the way of achieving their dreams. Recognizing this, SM Foundation, in collaboration with Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ), is making quality education accessible to deserving students, giving them the tools they need to succeed.

SM Foundation executive director Carmen Linda Atayde (front row, center) gathered with SM Scholars at SM City Mindpro for a meaningful session focused on guidance, mentoring, and catching up while getting to know their fellow recipients, fostering a sense of community among the program’s participants.
Investing in the Future
As one of 18 SM Foundation partner schools in Mindanao and one of three in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Universidad de Zamboanga plays a crucial role in ensuring that scholars receive the education, mentorship, and opportunities necessary to thrive. Through this partnership, students are not only given the chance to complete their degrees but are also equipped with essential life skills that prepare them for their professional journeys.
One shining example of this initiative is Alhadzfar Jammang, an SM Foundation scholar who graduated cum laude in 2023 with a degree in Accountancy. His story reflects the resilience of many Filipino students who dream of a better future but are hindered by financial struggles.
Education as a Gateway to Opportunity
Jammang, a native of Zamboanga City, grew up in a family that relied on his father’s income as a driver while his mother cared for him and his six siblings. The cost of higher education seemed out of reach, but his determination led him to pursue an SM Foundation scholarship. This opportunity covered his tuition and miscellaneous fees while also providing a stipend, enabling him to focus on his studies without the added burden of financial stress.
Beyond financial assistance, the program extended holistic support through mentorship, leadership training, and networking opportunities. Scholars were also given digital tools such as tablets to ensure they could continue their education during the pandemic, highlighting the foundation’s commitment to adapting to students’ needs.
A Collaborative Effort for Success
Education extends beyond textbooks and classrooms. The partnership between SM Foundation and UZ goes beyond funding—it fosters an environment that nurtures scholars’ growth. UZ’s faculty, particularly from the School of Business and Management, played a pivotal role in Jammang’s journey, providing mentorship and guidance that helped him hone his skills and develop confidence in his field.
The university’s emphasis on perseverance and service left a lasting impact on him. His active involvement in co-curricular activities, including the UZ Scholars and Grantees Association (UZ SGA), allowed him to engage with fellow scholars, participate in enrichment programs, and cultivate leadership skills that he now applies in his professional life.
The Lasting Impact of Education
Having graduated with distinction, Jammang is now focused on continuous learning, taking online training courses to further develop his skills and remain competitive in the finance and accounting industry. His journey underscores the importance of education not only as a tool for personal success but also as a means to contribute meaningfully to society.

For Jammang, the scholarship was more than financial aid—it was a support system that believed in his potential. Inspired by the generosity and mentorship he received, he now aspires to give back to his community and help other young individuals access the same opportunities that changed his life.
“Being an SM Scholar is more than just receiving support. It’s about being part of a bigger family that helps you grow. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had. My time as an SM scholar empowered me to be of service to my community in the future. I look forward to the day I can make a significant contribution to my family and community,” he shared.
