A supposed night of drinking and videoke turned deadly after a heated altercation between two groups of men escalated into a shooting incident late Wednesday night, May 20, in Barangay Canelar, Zamboanga City, leaving one Basilan native dead, another wounded, and the suspected gunman under police custody while confined in a hospital.

Police identified the fatality as Onlee Ladjaanang, 26, a native of Kampurnah, Isabela, Basilan, who was temporarily residing in Barangay Santa Maria, Zamboanga City. Authorities said Ladjaanang died while undergoing treatment at the Zamboanga City Medical Center after sustaining a gunshot wound that entered through his left armpit and exited through the left side of his abdomen.

Another victim, Kamaruddin Basirun Kannama, 25, also from Isabela City, Basilan, suffered a gunshot wound on his left waistline but survived the attack. Police said the injury was believed to have been caused by the same bullet that passed through Ladjaanang’s body. Kannama reportedly declined hospitalization and instead received first aid treatment from responding emergency personnel at the scene.

The suspect was identified by investigators as Kent Davy Falcasantos Enriquez, 25, single, and a resident of Barangay Boalan, Zamboanga City.

According to the initial investigation of Zamboanga City Police Station 11, the incident occurred at around 10:45 p.m. inside and outside a videoke house near Home Court along Canelar Moret in Barangay Canelar.

Authorities said both groups were engaged in a drinking session at Sebastian Store when a heated argument suddenly erupted. As tensions escalated, Enriquez allegedly pulled out a concealed firearm and opened fire at the victims.

Police reports indicated that only a single shot was fired, but the bullet struck Ladjaanang before exiting and hitting Kannama.

The violence was stopped only after one of the victims’ companions, identified as Subri Kannama, allegedly struck Enriquez on the head with a glass bottle during the commotion, preventing further gunfire. The suspect sustained injuries and was later rushed to the hospital.

Responding personnel from ZCPS11 immediately proceeded to the area after receiving a radio dispatch from the Milky Way Base at around 11 p.m. Authorities said patrol units reached the scene within a minute.

Members of the Scene of the Crime Operatives later processed the crime scene and recovered several pieces of evidence, including a Toyota Avanza bearing plate number GAP 1309 believed to have been used by the suspect.

Investigators also recovered a caliber .45 pistol hidden beneath the driver’s seat of the vehicle, which authorities believe was the firearm used in the shooting.

Police described the incident as a spontaneous confrontation allegedly fueled by intoxication and heightened emotions rather than a premeditated attack.

Enriquez remains under tight police guard while undergoing treatment at the ZamPen Medical Center. Authorities are now preparing criminal charges against the suspect as the investigation continues.

Police Corporal Ednor D. Jawadin was identified as the investigator handling the case.
