Davao Oriental’s Provincial Government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and in collaboration with the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), recognized the invaluable contributions of senior citizens by distributing cash gifts and letters of felicitation to 95 elderly beneficiaries across the province on March 17 at the Provincial Capitol Covered Court.
This inaugural cash gift distribution aligns with the newly implemented Republic Act 11982, also known as the Expanded Centenarian Act. Under this law, senior citizens residing in the Philippines or abroad receive financial incentives as they reach significant age milestones—P10,000 upon turning 80, 85, 90, and 95, and P100,000 upon reaching 100 years old.
Among the recipients, centenarian Leonisa N. Taloyo from the Municipality of Lupon was awarded P100,000 from the NCSC and an additional P30,000 from the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental. Taloyo, born on February 4, 1925, was the sole centenarian recognized during the event.
Governor Niño Uy, represented by Chief of Staff Everindo Esver, delivered an inspiring message honoring the senior citizens. He emphasized their crucial role as the foundation of Davao Oriental, acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions to the community.
“As your governor, it is an honor to be part of this special occasion where we express our gratitude and respect to our elders. While words cannot fully capture the depth of our appreciation for the sacrifices you’ve made and the lives you’ve touched, please know that you are all cherished and valued in every way,” Esver conveyed on behalf of the governor.
Governor Uy reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing senior citizens, recognizing them as parental figures and ensuring they receive continuous support from his administration.
The event also provided additional services for senior citizens, including free medical check-ups, National ID processing through the Philippine Statistics Office, and assistance under the PhilHealth program.
Officials and employees of the NCSC, led by Commissioner Ida Yap-Patron, attended the distribution ceremony, underscoring the government’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of the elderly community.
