Davao City—The City Government of Davao, through the City Agriculturist Office (CAgrO), officially turned over its second Solar-Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) to the farming community of Barangay Malabog, Paquibato District, in a ceremony held on Friday.
The initiative, funded by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and spearheaded by CAgrO, aims to provide a reliable and sustainable water source for local farmers, particularly in mitigating the effects of drought and ensuring the consistent production of high-value crops such as vegetables.
In a speech delivered by Peace 911 Team Leader CaryJane Laguna on behalf of Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, the city’s commitment to sustainable and innovative solutions for local farmers was emphasized. The mayor underscored that the SPIS aligns with Davao City’s vision for a greener, more resilient, and self-sustaining future.
“To our farmers, I hope this project gives you more courage and drive to continue farming. May this solar-powered irrigation system bring forth abundant harvests and greater opportunities for your community. Let us continue working together towards a future where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand, ensuring a prosperous Davao City for generations to come,” Duterte’s message stated.
Edgardo Haspe, Assistant Officer-In-Charge of CAgrO, highlighted that the SPIS will significantly support agricultural activities, especially during the El Niño season, reinforcing the city’s dedication to climate-resilient farming.
The Patag Farmers Association, the primary beneficiary of the project, expressed their gratitude to the city government, noting that the system will also benefit neighboring farmers. The association will be responsible for managing the operations of the SPIS to ensure its long-term sustainability.
This initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to promote peace and development in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA), particularly in Paquibato, which has transitioned from a conflict-affected zone into a hub of agricultural progress.
The turnover ceremony was attended by officials from CAgrO, representatives from the City Mayor’s Office, and local farmers, marking another milestone in Davao City’s push for agricultural sustainability and rural development.
