PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur – Two high-ranking members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a brief but intense firefight with government troops in Sitio Katipunan, Barangay San Lorenzo, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, on February 13.
The 3rd Special Forces “Arrowhead” Battalion, under the operational control of the 401st Infantry “Unite N’ Fight” Brigade, launched the operation following reports from residents about NPA extortion activities in the area.
The fatalities were identified as Larry Garcia, also known as alias Joven, commanding officer of the Regional Sentro de Gravidad, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC), and alias Gaga/Garing, the vice commanding officer of the same unit. The firefight lasted for 10 minutes, after which the remaining insurgents retreated, leaving behind their fallen comrades.
Captured Items and Local Response
Following the encounter, authorities recovered two backpacks, a Baofeng radio, two Nokia cellphones, a hand grenade, a Claymore mine (IED), blasting caps, assorted medical supplies, and subversive documents. These items were turned over for further investigation and potential legal action against individuals associated with the communist terrorist group (CTG).
The bodies of the slain rebels were handed over to the local government of Prosperidad for proper disposition.
Call for Peaceful Surrender
Col. Emil Cruz, Acting Commander of the 401st Infantry Brigade, lauded his troops for their swift and effective response, highlighting the crucial role of local communities in reporting insurgent activities.
“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community. This successful operation is a testament to the support of the local residents who stand with us in our shared quest for a peaceful and progressive life,” Col. Cruz said.
He also called on remaining NPA members to surrender peacefully, emphasizing the government’s continued efforts to offer them a chance to reintegrate into society.
“We encourage those who continue to resist to surrender and return to the folds of the law. We aim for peace and prosperity for all of us here in Agusan del Sur. What happened to these NPA members saddens us, but they chose violence despite our repeated offers of peace,” he added.
Government forces continue to monitor the area to prevent further insurgency-related incidents and to maintain peace and security in the region.
