TALACOGON, Agusan del Sur — A 15-year-old student was killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting incident in Barangay San Agustin, Talacogon, in the early hours of Saturday, October 24, after unidentified assailants opened fire on the victims as they were reportedly returning home from a local concert.
The shooting occurred at around 2 a.m. in Purok Anthurium, leaving the teenage student dead and a 23-year-old woman and a 13-year-old minor injured.
The fatality, identified only as Francisco in the initial report, was a resident of Barangay San Agustin. He was rushed to a hospital following the attack but was declared dead on arrival.
The two injured victims were identified as Leah Mea, 23, a resident of Coalicion, San Luis, and a 13-year-old boy from Barangay Nuevo, also in San Luis. Both were brought to Talacogon District Hospital for medical treatment.
Victims reportedly returning from concert
Initial police information indicated that the victims had attended a local concert on Friday evening, reportedly organized by the municipal government of Talacogon. They were on their way home when unidentified suspects allegedly attacked and shot them.
The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear. Authorities have yet to establish whether the victims were specifically targeted or determine what may have prompted the attack.
Following the incident, the suspect reportedly fled toward the municipality of San Luis, prompting the Talacogon Municipal Police Station to launch a hot pursuit operation.
Police also initiated a lockdown operation and coordinated with neighboring police stations and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) detachments in an effort to track down the fleeing suspect. Investigators are also gathering information from witnesses to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
Authorities activated the police operational plan known as IMPLAN CURE as part of their response to the incident.
Investigation ongoing
As of the initial police report, the suspect remained unidentified, and the motive behind the shooting had yet to be determined.
Investigators continue to pursue leads and examine information gathered from witnesses as law enforcement personnel work to locate the suspect.
The fatal shooting of a teenage student, alongside the wounding of two other victims, has raised serious concerns over public safety, particularly when people are traveling home after attending community activities.
