The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has urged the strengthening of peace mechanisms in the wake of a recent skirmish in Basilan that claimed the lives of two soldiers and injured 12 others. The group emphasized the need for proper coordination to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In a press conference coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Mamasapano clash, MILF Peace Implementing Panel Chairperson and BARMM Education Minister Mohagher Iqbal stressed that such tragic events should not be repeated. He attributed the Basilan and Mamasapano clashes to a lack of coordination as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement between the MILF and the Philippine government.
Chairman Iqbal expressed disappointment over the absence of the International Monitoring Team (IMT) since 2022. He highlighted the importance of a neutral third-party observer to ensure adherence to the ceasefire agreement and to avoid similar tragedies.
According to Iqbal, the MILF has been requesting the reinstatement of the IMT since 2022, but the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has reportedly opposed this move without providing clear reasons. Despite this, Iqbal reiterated the MILF’s willingness to include civilian observers in the IMT, should its return be approved.
The IMT, composed of military contingents from Malaysia, Brunei, and Libya, as well as development experts from Japan, Norway, and the European Union, has played a pivotal role in monitoring the ceasefire agreement and overseeing humanitarian, rehabilitation, and development initiatives under agreements between the government and the MILF.
Iqbal’s call comes at a critical time, as the MILF and other stakeholders strive to maintain peace and stability in the Bangsamoro region. The group underscored the urgency of reactivating a robust and impartial monitoring system to foster trust and prevent further violence.
With the peace process facing challenges, the MILF’s appeal serves as a reminder of the delicate balance required to sustain peace in the region.
