Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan – In a strong push for peace and unity ahead of the 2025 National and Local Elections, the 45th Infantry (Gallant) Battalion of the 11th Infantry (Alakdan) Division spearheaded two days of peace conversations with key leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) from April 26 to 27, 2025, at the battalion headquarters in Barangay Bohe Pahu, Ungkaya Pukan.

Dubbed MASHUWARA KALILINTAD or “Conversations on Public Order and Safety,” the initiative is a collaborative effort between the military and the Ministry of Public Order and Safety (MPOS) in Basilan. The dialogues sought to promote community engagement, strengthen inter-group cooperation, and ensure a safe and credible electoral process in the province.

On the first day, 16 MILF leaders, including Mr. Rajan F. Abduhraman, Deputy on Guerrilla Warfare of the 114th Base Command, and Mr. Abdulbazar J. Amad, MILF focal person for Tipo-Tipo and Ungkaya Pukan, participated in discussions centered on the theme “Promoting a Safe, Secure, and Successful Election 2025.” The session was facilitated by Mr. Shahid P. Akbara, Community Affairs Officer III of MPOS-Basilan.

The following day gathered 38 commanders and members from the MNLF, including Hji. Andy Anjabin, spokesperson of the Jihada MinSuPala Command. This engagement was coordinated with the help of Mr. Nurwaridz C. Abubakar, Community Affairs Officer I of MPOS-Basilan.

Participants came from various municipalities across Basilan, including Ungkaya Pukan, Tipo-Tipo, Al-Barka, and parts of Sumisip and Lamitan City. Their presence underscored the commitment of former combatants and local leaders to ensuring peaceful community involvement in the democratic process.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Franco F. Baylon, Commanding Officer of the 45th Infantry Battalion, these conversations are part of the battalion’s broader peacebuilding strategy to foster inclusive dialogue, deepen mutual understanding, and cultivate a stable and development-ready environment in the region.

“The success of these engagements reflects the growing collaboration between stakeholders committed to peace and democratic transition,” Lt. Col. Baylon stated.

As Basilan prepares for the 2025 elections, the 45th Infantry Battalion, MPOS Basilan, and their partners reaffirm their dedication to upholding public order and promoting peaceful participation across all sectors.
