In a significant cultural and historical milestone, the Bacarro Money-Printing Machine was unveiled at the Casa Bacarro Heritage Museum & Restaurant in the Heritage Town of Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, on December 12, 2024. This historic event marked the return of a vital relic from the Second World War, shedding light on a critical chapter of Mindanao’s wartime history.

A Wartime Treasure Returns

The Bacarro Money-Printing Machine, originally brought from the United States, played a pivotal role during World War II. Tasked with producing emergency and guerrilla notes under the authorization of President Manuel L. Quezon, the press addressed urgent military and government expenditures during a time of crisis.

Commissioned by General Douglas MacArthur through Sgt. Sam Wilson, the machine was responsible for printing Misamis Occidental Emergency Notes and Mindanao Notes. These currencies symbolized resistance and resourcefulness amidst the chaos of war.

However, the Japanese occupation declared these notes illegal, branding them as “enemy notes.” Possession of these currencies was punishable by execution, a decree that demanded extraordinary courage from Filipinos. Despite the risks, many refused to surrender their notes, driven by loyalty and patriotism, with some even sacrificing their lives to protect the symbols of their resistance.

A Symbol of Resilience and Education

After 80 years, the unveiling of the Bacarro Printing Press stands as a tribute to the heroism of wartime Filipinos and their unwavering commitment to freedom. Now housed in the Casa Bacarro Heritage Museum, the machine aims to educate future generations about this dark yet inspiring period in the nation’s history.

Preserving Culture at Casa Bacarro

The event also highlighted the Casa Bacarro Heritage Museum & Restaurant’s dedication to preserving Jimenez’s rich cultural heritage. Department of Tourism Northern Mindanao Regional Director Marie Elaine S. Unchuan, who toured the museum, praised its authentic portrayal of 1800s life and its role in safeguarding the cultural identity of Jimenez.

Director Unchuan expressed admiration for Jimenez’s heritage preservation efforts, recognizing the town as a cultural treasure in Misamis Occidental. The unveiling of the printing press further cements Jimenez’s reputation as a center of historical and cultural significance.

Looking Ahead

The Bacarro Money-Printing Machine’s return is more than a commemoration of the past; it is a call to honor the sacrifices of those who stood firm against oppression. By showcasing this historical artifact, Casa Bacarro creates a bridge between history and modernity, ensuring the legacy of wartime resilience continues to inspire future generations.

As Jimenez celebrates this momentous event, the unveiling reaffirms the town’s place not just as a Heritage Town but as a guardian of stories that define the nation’s enduring spirit.
