BONIFACIO, Misamis Occidental — Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱520,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation in Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental, on Sunday, July 5, 2026, leading to the arrest of a 51-year-old suspect.

The operation was conducted at Purok 1, Barangay Digson, where personnel of the Bonifacio Municipal Police Station flagged down a Nissan Navara for a routine inspection.

The driver, identified only by the alias “Mocsin,” a 51-year-old tricycle driver and resident of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte, was taken into custody after police discovered a large cache of cigarettes believed to have been illegally transported.

During the inspection, authorities recovered 650 reams of Red New Berlin cigarettes allegedly lacking the necessary importation and transport documents, raising suspicion that the products were smuggled into the country.

Police estimated the total value of the confiscated cigarettes at ₱520,000.

Following the seizure, the suspect, along with the recovered contraband, was brought to the Bonifacio Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and the filing of appropriate charges.

The confiscated cigarettes are scheduled to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for proper disposition and further investigation to determine their origin, intended destination, and whether other individuals or groups are involved in the illegal transport of untaxed tobacco products.

Authorities noted that the campaign against cigarette smuggling remains a priority as the illegal trade deprives the government of billions of pesos in tax revenues each year while undermining legitimate businesses and fueling illicit economic activities.

The Philippine National Police also urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious transportation, storage, or sale of contraband goods to law enforcement authorities. Police emphasized that community cooperation is vital in curbing smuggling operations, protecting government revenue, and ensuring the safety and security of local communities.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the illegal operation and identify other possible individuals connected to the shipment.
