Kidapawan City, Philippines — The City Government of Kidapawan continues its environmental mission under the flagship program Canopy ‘25. This ambitious initiative aims to intensify tree-planting activities across the city, bringing together various sectors of society to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
On Saturday, November 23, representatives from 54 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Associations joined the City LGU in planting 300 Bayog and Red Lawaan trees. These were strategically placed along the streams and forested areas of Barangay Junction, ensuring they grow in suitable environments to thrive and provide long-term ecological benefits.
The event highlighted a community-driven approach, with the participation of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), the Public OFW Desk Office, the City Information Office, and the Barangay LGU. Leading the barangay efforts were Chairperson Julia Abrea and Kagawad Ian Sarigumba, whose leadership emphasized the importance of local collaboration in achieving environmental goals.
Residents living near the planting sites also expressed their gratitude for the program. Among them was an 80-year-old grandmother who has long resided near the streams, sharing her joy in seeing initiatives that ensure cleaner water and healthier surroundings for future generations.
“Planting trees is not just for us but for the next generation,” she remarked.
Canopy ‘25 underscores Kidapawan City’s commitment to expanding its forest cover and mitigating the effects of climate change. Through sustained efforts and the active involvement of citizens and organizations, the city moves closer to its vision of a greener and more resilient community.
The City Government invites everyone to join future Canopy ‘25 activities, proving that environmental stewardship is a collective responsibility and that every tree planted makes a difference.
