Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay— More than two years after it was confiscated, 53 sacks of ammonium nitrate were safely destroyed by authorities on October 31, 2024, in Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay. The ammonium nitrate, a chemical known for its explosive potential, was initially seized on May 29, 2021, during a raid in Barangay Pulo Mabao under a court-issued search warrant. The operation was conducted in line with Republic Act 9516, which regulates the unlawful handling of explosives.
The destruction was led by PLTCOL Gary T. Bahoy, Deputy Provincial Director for Operations, with support from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)-Sibugay Team, Regional Civil Security Unit-Sibugay Area Command, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – Ipil, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), MITSON, and the Provincial Mobile Force Company – Sibugay. Media representatives were also present to witness the process, ensuring transparency and public awareness of the safety measures taken.
Following safety protocols, the ammonium nitrate was neutralized through a method of soaking and dissolving in water, which effectively minimized its explosive risks. This disposal method reflects the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding the public by responsibly handling confiscated hazardous materials.
This coordinated effort underscores the dedication of local law enforcement and environmental agencies in preventing the misuse of dangerous chemicals and highlights the importance of adhering to legal safety standards for such substances.
