More than 200 farmers from the provinces of Bukidnon and Agusan del Norte in Mindanao have successfully completed the SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) on Sustainable Agriculture program, showcasing the fruits of their labor with a bountiful harvest of crops, including vibrant carrots grown through new farming techniques.
The graduation ceremonies took place simultaneously on September 27, 2024, in two locations: Talakag in Bukidnon and Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte. These events marked the culmination of a 14-week intensive training program, equipping farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to implement sustainable agricultural practices.
Empowering Farmers with Advanced Techniques
During the program, participants learned a wide array of farming methods, including advanced crop management, soil health maintenance, organic pest control, post-harvest handling, and marketing strategies. These new techniques aim to enhance the farmers’ productivity and improve the quality of their produce, ensuring long-term sustainability.
In Bukidnon, the farmers are already preparing to expand their market reach, with plans to supply produce to larger markets, including SM supermarkets. This new opportunity is expected to boost their income and provide a consistent demand for their crops, ensuring a more stable livelihood.
Inclusion of Indigenous Communities in Agusan del Norte
Meanwhile, in Agusan del Norte, nearly half of the graduating batch comes from indigenous communities, reflecting the SM Group’s commitment to inclusivity. By involving diverse rural populations in the program, the initiative not only uplifts farmers economically but also fosters stronger, more resilient agricultural communities.
Graduates in both regions also participate in the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP). The combination of training from both initiatives is expected to further strengthen their capacity to sustain and grow their farming ventures.
Promoting Sustainability and Food Security
The SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program aims to empower local farmers by imparting sustainable farming techniques that enhance food security, promote environmental stewardship, and improve rural livelihoods. Through this initiative, farmers are better equipped to handle the challenges of modern agriculture while maintaining practices that protect the environment.
The KSK program is a collaboration among various partners, including SM Supermalls, SM Markets, DSWD, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and local government units from Cabadbaran and Talakag, along with their respective agriculture offices.
This partnership underscores the importance of collective efforts in uplifting the agricultural sector and ensuring a sustainable future for local farmers across Mindanao.
