High in the cool, mist-laced mountains of Davao del Sur, coffee is more than a crop—it is culture, livelihood, and quiet ambition taking root. The Davao Region has long been a powerhouse in Philippine coffee production, its fertile highlands yielding diverse and high-quality beans that fuel both local economies and daily caffeine rituals. Today, that legacy is being elevated—quite literally—by the country’s first-ever Geisha coffee farm.

Coffee farming plays a vital role in the Davao Region, empowering thousands of smallholder farmers while positioning the area as an emerging hub for specialty coffee in the Philippines. From robusta to arabica, the region’s varied elevations and rich soils create ideal conditions for producing beans with character and complexity. Now, with the successful cultivation of Geisha—one of the world’s most prized coffee varieties—Davao is stepping onto the global specialty coffee stage.

This milestone drew the attention of the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11), which recently visited the pioneering Acu Coffee Farm in Barangay Kapatagan, Digos City, Davao del Sur. The visit signaled not just recognition, but a strategic push to support innovation and high-value agriculture in the region.

Geisha coffee, a premium Arabica variety celebrated for its floral aroma, tea-like body, and vibrant acidity, is notoriously difficult to grow. First introduced to the Philippines in 2018 by Taiwanese farmer Acu Sicayang, the variety was brought in as seedlings from Panama—its modern-day birthplace and the benchmark for world-class Geisha. What followed were years of experimentation, setbacks, and careful adaptation to local conditions.

Against the odds, Sicayang succeeded.

Known among peers as a passionate and meticulous grower, Sicayang nurtured Geisha coffee to thrive in Philippine soil, proving that the country’s highlands could meet the exacting demands of this delicate variety. His seven-hectare farm hosts several coffee types, including Catimor and Catura, but four hectares are dedicated exclusively to Geisha. Sitting at an elevation of 1,737 meters above sea level, the farm benefits from cool temperatures and slow bean development—conditions essential for unlocking Geisha’s signature flavors.

For Sicayang, success is not something to keep bottled up. He is committed to sharing his knowledge with local farmers, often emphasizing that Geisha cultivation requires patience, precision, and perseverance. Unlike hardier varieties, Geisha is more sensitive to climate, soil, and farm management—yet its premium value offers transformative potential for farmers willing to invest the effort.

Recognizing this potential, DA-11 sees Acu Coffee Farm as a gateway to broader rural development. By engaging with this pioneering site, the agency aims to build farmer capacity, elevate Davao’s global coffee reputation, and ensure that rural communities benefit from the high-value specialty coffee chain.

The visit, led by Regional Technical Director for Operations Marie Ann M. Constantino and Regional Coffee Coordinator Dr. John Paul Matuguinas, opened discussions on concrete technical support for Geisha coffee production and expansion. Proposed interventions include the establishment of a dedicated nursery project, assistance in registering planting materials with regulatory agencies such as the Bureau of Plant Industry to ensure legal compliance and variety protection, genome sequencing, and research initiatives. Techno-demonstration activities and programs to link local farmers and cooperatives to premium markets are also in the pipeline.

At its core, the initiative is about more than coffee. It is about strengthening Davao’s position as a hub for high-value crops, supporting farmer-led innovation, and enhancing the global competitiveness of Philippine agriculture. Each Geisha tree planted in the highlands represents a careful bet on quality over quantity—and on farmers as stewards of world-class produce.

As the aroma of Geisha coffee begins to rise from Davao’s mountains, it carries with it a bold message: Philippine coffee is ready to be tasted, recognized, and celebrated on the world stage. One carefully brewed cup at a time. ☕🌱
