Claveria, Misamis Oriental – A group of twenty-eight (28) former rebels successfully completed a 10-day deradicalization program aimed at transforming them into peace partners, culminating in a ceremony on September 20, 2024. The program was organized by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) of Misamis Oriental, in collaboration with the 58th Infantry (Dimalulupig) Battalion, 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade, Philippine National Police (PNP), and various peace agencies under the theme, “Pag Bag-o Para sa Pamilya, Pag Bag-o Para sa Kalinaw” (Change for Family, Change for Peace).
The training, held at the Halfway House of the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office in San Martin, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, took place from September 11 to 20. It was designed in two phases: self-transformation and socio-economic development. These phases served to rehabilitate the participants and prepare them for reintegration into society.
The first phase focused on personal transformation, with psychosocial activities such as individual and group sharing under the theme “Ako Kini sa Una, Ako Kini sa Karon, Ako Kini sa Umaabot” (Who I Was, Who I Am, and Who I Will Be). The spiritual aspect of the training was also emphasized. The second phase provided practical seminars on inter-agency programs, livelihood training, community immersion, and team-building exercises, empowering the former rebels to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
During the closing ceremony, Mr. Jhunleymar Abella, Provincial Social Welfare Development Officer of Misamis Oriental, representing Governor Peter “Sr. Pedro” Unabia, and Engr. Marisia Naybe, Provincial Director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), led the awarding of financial assistance. Each participant received PHP 20,000 from the PSWDO as financial support for their reintegration, along with remuneration for surrendered firearms.
Mr. Abella expressed his gratitude to the participants and the program organizers, commending their dedication to peacebuilding. He highlighted that the government’s consistent support is crucial for the reintegration process.
Ltc Christian C Uy, Commanding Officer of the 58th Infantry Battalion, underscored the significance of the deradicalization training, noting that it is a vital component of achieving lasting peace. “This training is essential not only for their successful reintegration but also for them to become active partners in maintaining peace and security in their communities,” Uy said.
The program reflects the government’s comprehensive, whole-of-nation approach to fostering inclusive and sustainable peace in Misamis Oriental, ensuring that former rebels are given the tools and support needed to rebuild their lives and contribute to societal peace and development.
