Zamboanga City – February 14, 2025 – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 9 (BFAR-9) officially led the ceremonies for the 14th Open Fishing Season for sardines, marking the conclusion of the three-month sardine fishing ban. The event took place at the Permex Compound in Ayala, symbolizing the return of commercial sardine fishing in the region.

The annual fishing ban, implemented under BFAR Administrative Circular No. 255, was enforced from November 15, 2024, to February 15, 2025. It covered the East Sulu Sea, Sibugay Bay, and Basilan Strait, aiming to allow the sardine population to replenish and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry.

BFAR-9 Regional Director Al-Zath Kunting emphasized the importance of responsible fishing practices in maintaining ecological balance while securing a stable livelihood for fisherfolk. He extended his gratitude to the Southern Philippines Deep Sea Fishing Association (SOPHIL), government agencies, and local officials, including Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe, for their unwavering support in promoting sustainable fisheries management.

“The temporary closure of the sardine fishing season is a critical conservation measure that strengthens Zamboanga Peninsula’s reputation as the Sardine Capital of the Philippines,” Kunting said. “We commend our stakeholders for their commitment to marine conservation and ensuring the sustainability of our fishery resources.”

The ceremony was attended by key representatives from the Department of Agriculture Region 9, the Coast Guard District of Southwestern Mindanao, the Philippine Fishery Development Authority, the Naval Forces of Western Mindanao, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, City Agriculturist Arben Magdugo representing Mayor Dalipe, and various other local and national stakeholders. Their participation reaffirmed the collective efforts in boosting the region’s economy while protecting marine biodiversity.

With the lifting of the ban, commercial fishers can now resume sardine fishing operations, a vital industry that significantly contributes to the local economy. The government continues to emphasize the enforcement of sustainable fishing practices to ensure the prosperity of the industry for future generations.
