Panabo City, Davao del Norte – December 6, 2024

Operatives from the National Bureau of Investigation Region XI (NBI-11) arrested 59 individuals, including 55 Chinese nationals, three Malaysians, and one Filipina, in a dawn raid on an alleged illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub located in Purok 6, Barangay Manay, Panabo City.

The operation, conducted at 2:00 AM, was based on intelligence received from the NBI’s national headquarters. According to NBI-XI Regional Director Atty. Archie Albao, the raid targeted a warehouse converted into living quarters for the workers.

During the raid, authorities confiscated approximately 60 computers, over 100 cellphones, two shotguns with ammunition, four pairs of handcuffs, and other personal items belonging to the suspects. The arrested individuals are currently in NBI custody for proper disposition, and further validation of their identities is underway.

Alarm Over Political Connections

Panabo City Vice Mayor Gregorio “Banjong” Dujali called for an investigation into the illegal POGO operations by the House of Representatives’ QuadCom. He expressed concern over the operation’s scale and alleged links to political figures. “It is alarming that such illegal activities are happening in our city, with reports suggesting political protection,” Dujali said.

City Councilor Atty. Jam Macla also expressed shock at the discovery and supported the proposed resolution in the City Council to push for a thorough probe at the national level.

A Call for Accountability

The raid highlights ongoing efforts to combat illegal POGO operations in the country. These unlicensed hubs have raised concerns due to their links to human trafficking, labor exploitation, and the potential involvement of corrupt officials.

Authorities vowed to pursue legal action against those behind the operations, including possible government protectors. “This raid is a reminder that no one is above the law. We will not tolerate activities that undermine public safety and trust,” said Atty. Albao.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the NBI committed to unmasking the network behind the illegal POGO operations in Panabo City.
