ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) has dealt another significant blow to illegal smuggling operations after intercepting more than ₱234.3 million worth of smuggled foreign-brand cigarettes in the waters off Lutangan Island, Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay, reinforcing the military’s intensified campaign against transnational maritime crimes in Western Mindanao.
The successful anti-smuggling operation was carried out on July 19, 2026, resulting in the confiscation of 1,436 master cases and 55 reams of foreign-brand cigarettes bearing the labels New Berlin and Bosqu. Authorities also seized the motorboat used to transport the illegal cargo.
Following the operation, all confiscated contraband, together with the seized vessel, were formally turned over to the Bureau of Customs–Port of Zamboanga for proper inventory, legal processing, and disposition in accordance with existing customs and anti-smuggling laws.
The operation dealt a substantial setback to a large-scale smuggling network that authorities say poses serious threats to government revenues, legitimate businesses, and the security of maritime trade routes across Western Mindanao.
Military officials emphasized that the successful interception prevented millions of pesos in unpaid taxes from entering the black market while disrupting the operations of criminal groups that exploit the region’s extensive coastlines and sea lanes for illegal commerce.
The Naval Command Western Mindanao underscored that anti-smuggling operations remain a key component of its broader maritime security mission, aimed at protecting the country’s territorial waters from organized criminal activities, including illicit trade, smuggling, piracy, and other transnational crimes.
Under the leadership of Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo M. Reyes Jr., PN, the command has sustained aggressive maritime patrols and intelligence-driven operations to secure Western Mindanao’s strategic waterways and deny criminal syndicates access to the country’s maritime borders.
NCWM reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s economic interests and preserving the integrity of its maritime domain.
“The message is unequivocal,” the command stressed. “Western Mindanao’s waters will never be a safe passage for smugglers, and every attempt to use them for illegal trade will be met with decisive action.”
The latest seizure further highlights the Philippine Navy’s continuing efforts, in close coordination with other law enforcement agencies, to strengthen border security and intensify the government’s campaign against smuggling and other forms of economic sabotage that undermine national development and public welfare.
