TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental — Police seized an estimated ₱6.49 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes and arrested two men during a checkpoint operation in Tangub City in the early hours of October 20, 2026, as authorities intensified efforts to curb the illegal cigarette trade in Northern Mindanao.

The operation was conducted at approximately 3:10 a.m. by personnel of the Tangub City Police Station, the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC), and the Provincial Intelligence Unit under Police Regional Office 10 (PRO-10).
Police intercepted a Mitsubishi wing van truck traveling from Zamboanga Sibugay and bound for Bulacan. During the inspection, the driver reportedly failed to present the required documents covering the shipment, prompting authorities to examine the truck’s cargo.
The inspection led to the discovery of 8,116 reams of Modern-brand cigarettes with an estimated market value of ₱6,492,800, according to the police report.
Authorities arrested the truck driver, identified only by the alias Jun, 33, and his helper, known as alias Jef, 26. Their identities were withheld in the initial police account.
The two men were brought to the Tangub City Police Station for documentation and further investigation. Police said the seized cigarettes and the truck were scheduled for turnover to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for appropriate action.
Authorities intensify campaign against cigarette smuggling
The seizure underscores the continuing challenge of preventing potentially illicit cigarette shipments from moving across provincial boundaries and reaching markets outside Mindanao.
The shipment’s reported route from Zamboanga Sibugay to Bulacan also highlights the importance of checkpoint inspections and intelligence-driven enforcement in monitoring the movement of goods along major transport corridors.
However, the absence of shipment documents, while prompting police intervention, does not by itself establish the full circumstances of the shipment or prove the criminal liability of the arrested individuals. The case will require further investigation and appropriate legal proceedings.
Police Regional Office 10 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Nestor C. Babagay Jr. said the police would continue strengthening intelligence-driven operations to prevent smuggling and other illegal activities in the region.
PRO-10 said the operation reflects its commitment to preventing Northern Mindanao from being used as a transit route for illegal trade, in line with the Bagong PNP for Bagong Pilipinas campaign and its commitment to “Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman” (Fast, Honest, and Felt Service).
The next steps include the turnover of the seized shipment and vehicle to the Bureau of Customs, further examination of the cargo and its accompanying documents, and the determination of any applicable violations under Philippine law.
Authorities have yet to provide further details on the origin of the cigarettes, their intended recipients, or whether other individuals or groups may be connected to the shipment.
