PARANG, Maguindanao del Norte — Authorities intercepted 300 master cases of suspected smuggled cigarettes worth approximately ₱17.55 million and arrested a truck driver following a coordinated hot pursuit operation in Barangay Nituan, Parang, on October 19, 2026, the Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR) reported.

The operation began when the driver of a white wing van truck allegedly failed to stop at an initial checkpoint. Police personnel immediately alerted a nearby checkpoint, prompting a coordinated pursuit that led to the interception of the vehicle at a coconut trading compound in Barangay Nituan.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered a shipment of FORT-brand cigarettes believed to have been transported without the necessary legal documentation. The confiscated cargo consisted of 300 master cases, equivalent to 15,000 reams, with an estimated market value of ₱17,550,000.
The driver was arrested after failing to present the required documents authorizing the transport of the cigarette shipment. Authorities have not yet disclosed the suspect’s identity as the investigation proceeds.
The successful interception involved personnel from the 3rd Maneuver Platoon, 1401st Regional Mobile Force Company, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 14-A, Tactical Support Company-A of RMFB 14-A, Regional Intelligence Unit 15, Maritime Group, Maguindanao Maritime Police Station, and the 2nd Marine Rifle Battalion, in coordination with the Parang Municipal Police Station.
Following the seizure, the joint operating units conducted the physical inventory, counting, and marking of the confiscated cigarettes at the scene in the presence of the required witnesses to document the evidence and establish accountability.
The arrested driver was informed of the reason for the arrest and apprised of his constitutional rights. The suspect and the confiscated shipment were subsequently brought to the appropriate police office for booking and further investigation.
Authorities said the seized cigarettes are pending turnover to the Bureau of Customs for appropriate action. Possible charges are also being pursued, subject to the results of the investigation and the determination of applicable violations.
Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Regional Director PBGEN Christopher M. Abecia commended the personnel involved, citing their vigilance, swift response, and coordination in intercepting the shipment.
“This operation demonstrates the importance of vigilance, timely information-sharing, and close coordination among our law enforcement and security partners. We will continue to take decisive action against smuggling and other illegal activities that undermine lawful commerce and public welfare. Every successful operation reflects our commitment to protecting our communities and upholding the rule of law in the Bangsamoro region,” Abecia said.
The operation underscores the role of coordinated law enforcement efforts in detecting and intercepting suspected illicit goods moving through the Bangsamoro region. The swift response following the truck driver’s alleged failure to stop at a checkpoint enabled authorities to locate the vehicle and secure the shipment before it could proceed farther.
PRO BAR said it would continue strengthening intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency cooperation to prevent the movement of illicit goods and hold those found responsible accountable under the law.
The case remains under investigation, with the Bureau of Customs expected to take appropriate action on the seized shipment once it is formally turned over.
