PANGUTARAN, Sulu — Grief and outrage continue to grip the island municipality of Pangutaran following the tragic death of a 13-year-old Grade 7 student, identified as Sheryl A. Ubah, whose body was reportedly found lifeless early in the morning of July 15, 2026, while she was on her way to school near her home in Sitio Siekong, Barangay Simbahan.

The shocking incident has sparked widespread calls for justice from residents, educators, local officials, and the victim’s family, with social media flooded by the rallying cry: “Justice for Sheryl Ubah” and “Justice for Pangutaran.”
According to statements released by local authorities and community members, Sheryl, a student of Pangutaran National High School, left home to attend her classes but never made it to school. Her untimely death has left the close-knit island community in mourning while raising serious concerns over the safety of students traveling to and from educational institutions.
A teacher who had once served as Sheryl’s adviser in Kindergarten and again in Grade 4 expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy.
“You will always be remembered. As your former adviser in Kindergarten and Grade 4, I am deeply saddened by your passing. May you rest in peace, and may justice be served,” the teacher wrote in a heartfelt tribute.
Community united in grief
The tragedy has deeply shaken residents of Pangutaran, many of whom described the incident as one that has instilled fear throughout the community.
Residents have appealed for a swift and impartial investigation, emphasizing that every child deserves to live and study in a safe environment.
Community leaders and concerned citizens stressed that justice is not only for the victim’s family but also for every student who deserves protection while pursuing education.
“We ask for justice for Pangutaran. What happened in our community has caused grief and fear. We only ask that the incident be thoroughly investigated and that justice be served so peace may return and everyone can once again feel safe,” one community appeal stated.

Authorities assured the public that the identity of informants will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
Mayor vows justice
Pangutaran Mayor Asri Taib strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence against an innocent child.
In an official statement released on July 16, the mayor extended his deepest condolences to Sheryl’s bereaved family and reaffirmed the municipal government’s commitment to pursuing justice.
“On behalf of the LGU of Pangutaran and my own family, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family of the victim. We are truly heartbroken by this tragedy,” Mayor Taib said.
He emphasized that the municipal government would not stop until those responsible are identified and held accountable.
The mayor also appealed to various sectors of the community to work together in solving the case.
He urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation, called on barangay officials to fully cooperate with law enforcement, and appealed to residents who may have witnessed suspicious activity or possess relevant information to come forward.
“Your help is very important in getting justice for this child. We will not stop until we achieve justice—for justice, for the truth,” the mayor said.
Calls for thorough investigation
Supporters of the victim have likewise appealed to the Philippine National Police, local government officials, and all concerned investigative agencies to ensure that every available piece of evidence is carefully examined and that the investigation remains impartial and transparent.
They emphasized that accountability must be established through due legal process and encouraged anyone with firsthand knowledge of the incident to cooperate with authorities.
The tragic death of the young student has reignited discussions on community safety, particularly the security of children traveling to and from school in remote areas.
As investigators continue to gather evidence and pursue leads, the people of Pangutaran remain united in mourning and steadfast in their demand for justice.
For many in the island municipality, Sheryl’s death has become more than a criminal investigation—it is a solemn reminder of the collective responsibility to protect every child and ensure that no family suffers a similar tragedy again.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have yet to publicly identify any suspect or disclose a possible motive behind the killing.
