MAITUM, Sarangani Province — What began as an ordinary day of swimming in a river ended in a heartbreaking act of heroism after a 14-year-old girl sacrificed her own life to save her three younger cousins from a deadly king cobra attack in Barangay Batian, Maitum, on Monday.

According to the victim’s family, the four children were bathing in a river in Crossing Kuda, Barangay Batian, when they were suddenly confronted by a banakon, locally known as “swaga,” or king cobra—one of the world’s most venomous snakes.

Instead of fleeing to safety, the young girl instinctively shielded her three younger cousins from the snake. She reportedly embraced and covered them with her body to prevent the cobra from reaching them.

In doing so, she became the target of the attack.

The snake bit the teenager on the back, inflicting a fatal dose of venom.

Despite efforts to rush her to a hospital, the girl succumbed to the powerful neurotoxic venom before she could receive life-saving treatment.

Her grandfather recounted that the teenager, being the eldest among the children, did not hesitate to protect her younger relatives despite the grave danger.

Family members believe that had she not intervened, more children could have been seriously injured or killed.

The tragic incident has since sparked an outpouring of grief across Maitum and neighboring communities, with many describing the teenager as a true hero whose final act embodied extraordinary courage, selflessness, and unconditional love for her family.

Local Government Extends Assistance

Maitum Mayor James Basquinez Reganit personally visited the bereaved family to express his condolences and assured them that the local government would shoulder all funeral-related expenses to help ease their burden during this difficult time.

The mayor also honored the young girl’s extraordinary bravery and selflessness, recognizing her sacrifice that saved the lives of her younger cousins.

Family’s Heartbreaking Farewell

The victim’s elder sister shared an emotional tribute on social media, expressing the family’s overwhelming grief over the loss of their youngest sibling.

She recalled how her sister had dreamed of becoming a police officer and had promised to study hard to achieve that goal.

The grieving sister wrote that the family could not accept her sudden passing, saying she was still too young and had so many dreams left to fulfill. She vowed that her younger sister would forever remain in their hearts and memories.

Family Appeals to Stop Sharing Graphic Video

As the tragedy gained attention online, the victim’s family appealed to the public to stop circulating a video showing the aftermath of the snakebite.

In a heartfelt message, the family asked internet users to delete the footage and refrain from sharing it further, saying its continued circulation only adds to their pain during this time of mourning.

They appealed for privacy, compassion, and respect as they grieve the loss of their beloved daughter and sister.

A Hero Remembered

The teenager’s final act has become a powerful testament to courage and selfless love.

Though her life was tragically cut short, her bravery ensured that her three younger cousins survived the terrifying encounter with one of the world’s deadliest snakes.

As the community mourns the loss of a young life filled with dreams and promise, many continue to remember her not only as a loving daughter and sister but as a young heroine whose extraordinary sacrifice will never be forgotten.
