MAIMBUNG, Sulu — A long-standing community dispute in Maimbung, Sulu was peacefully resolved through dialogue and cooperation after government authorities successfully facilitated an amicable settlement between two families, culminating in the voluntary surrender of a caliber .45 pistol as a symbol of reconciliation.

The peace-building initiative, held on June 26 at the Headquarters of the 41st Infantry “Partner for Peace” Battalion in Sitio Batoh Habah, Barangay Matatal, highlighted the continuing efforts of security forces, local government officials, and community leaders to prevent violence and strengthen grassroots peace initiatives across the province.
The settlement was spearheaded by the 41st Infantry (Partner for Peace) Battalion under the leadership of Lt. Col. Genesis R. Gabrido, in close coordination with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Maimbung, the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Barangay Tandu Patong, and the Maimbung Municipal Police Station (MPS).
The dispute involved Musad D. Umad, Hamir U. Bakil, and Al-faizer M. Bakil as the first party, and Albasir A. Albani as the second party—all residents of Barangay Tandu Patong, Maimbung.
Authorities said both parties agreed to set aside their differences after engaging in constructive dialogue facilitated by local officials and security forces. The agreement restored peaceful relations between the families and reinforced community solidarity.
As a significant gesture of goodwill and commitment to lasting peace, the parties voluntarily surrendered a caliber .45 pistol to authorities during the settlement proceedings.
Military officials described the firearm surrender as a powerful demonstration of the parties’ determination to prevent future violence and embrace peaceful conflict resolution.
The voluntary turnover of the firearm also supports the municipality’s Peace-Centered Community Advocacy, an initiative that encourages responsible firearm ownership, peaceful mediation of disputes, and stronger community participation in maintaining law and order throughout Sulu.
The settlement proceedings were witnessed by Barangay Chairman Nurhusin T. Ipah, representing the LGU of Maimbung; Lt. Col. Gabrido; 1st Lt. Vilmer Pascua, Commanding Officer of Alpha Company, 41st Infantry Battalion; and Police Major Elmer C. Espaldon, Chief of the Maimbung Municipal Police Station, represented during the event by Police Master Sgt. Khadamar L. Jumsali.
Authorities said the successful mediation underscored the effectiveness of collaboration among the military, police, local government units, barangay officials, and community stakeholders in resolving conflicts before they escalate into violence.
They emphasized that dialogue, mutual respect, and community engagement remain among the most effective tools in sustaining peace, enhancing public safety, and promoting stability in conflict-affected communities.
The 41st Infantry Battalion reaffirmed its commitment to continue working alongside local government units, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders in advancing peace-building efforts across Sulu.
The battalion said it remains steadfast in fostering resilient, conflict-free communities through cooperation, trust-building, and people-centered peace initiatives, while encouraging all sectors to work together toward a peaceful, progressive, culturally vibrant, and stable Province of Sulu.
