JOSEFINA, Zamboanga del Sur — A quiet farming community in Barangay Litapan was left in shock and mourning after a mother and her three young children were brutally slaughtered inside their home in what authorities described as a gruesome mass stabbing incident discovered on Monday morning, June 29.

The victims were identified as Arlene Fernan Dumalte, the family’s mother, and her three children: Nacel Dumalte, 14; En-En Dumalte, 13; and Arnel Dumalte, 12.

Police said all four victims were found lifeless inside their residence, bearing multiple stab wounds believed to have been inflicted by still unidentified assailants.
Initial investigation indicates that the victims were likely attacked inside their own home, where they had no opportunity to escape. Authorities have yet to determine the exact sequence of events, the motive behind the killings, and the identities of those responsible.
Responding to the incident were personnel from the Josefina Municipal Police Station, the 53rd Infantry Battalion, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), emergency responders, and the Barangay Council of Litapan, who immediately secured the crime scene.
Investigators are awaiting the results of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) examination to establish the number of stab wounds sustained by each victim and gather forensic evidence that could help identify the perpetrators.
Police confirmed that Arlene was separated from her husband, but authorities have not disclosed whether this has any connection to the crime. Investigators are pursuing all possible angles and have yet to identify any suspects.
The horrific killings have sent waves of fear throughout the municipality, with residents demanding swift justice for what many described as the massacre of an entire family.
The tragedy has also devastated the community of Litapan Integrated School, where the three children were enrolled.
In a statement posted on social media, the school mourned the loss of Arlene and her children, identifying Nacel as a Grade 10 student and serving as the school’s SSLG President, En-En as a Grade 8 student, and Arnel as a Grade 6 pupil.
“Our school community grieves the loss of Arlene Fernan Dumalte, and her children. Their sudden passing leaves a void in our hearts,” the school said.
“Beyond our sorrow, we call for justice. We urge the authorities to investigate the case thoroughly, bring out the whole truth, and ensure accountability.”
The heartbreaking deaths of the three young students have sparked an outpouring of grief online, with classmates, teachers, and residents expressing disbelief that children with promising futures could become victims of such a brutal act.
As investigators continue their exhaustive probe, authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could help identify the perpetrators to immediately coordinate with the Josefina Municipal Police Station.
No arrests have been made as of this writing, and police have yet to establish a definitive motive behind one of the deadliest family killings reported in Zamboanga del Sur this year.
The investigation remains ongoing.
