TUKURAN, Zamboanga del Sur — The Philippine National Police (PNP) intensified its campaign against economic crimes after authorities intercepted more than ₱6.3 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a joint checkpoint operation in Zamboanga del Sur on June 22, 2026.
The operation was conducted at a boundary checkpoint in Barangay Militar, Tukuran, through the combined efforts of the Tukuran Municipal Police Station, the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 9, the Philippine Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion, and representatives from the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Philippine Tobacco Institute.
Authorities said the successful interception highlights the government’s ongoing crackdown on smuggling activities that undermine legitimate businesses, deprive the government of vital revenues, and negatively affect the country’s economic stability.
According to reports, law enforcement personnel flagged down and inspected a closed van passing through the checkpoint. During the routine inspection, officers noticed several boxes of cigarettes visible through an opening in the vehicle’s cargo compartment.
The discovery prompted authorities to conduct a more thorough verification and inspection of the vehicle, leading to the recovery of approximately 2,000 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes of various brands.
The Bureau of Customs assessed the seized contraband at ₱6,313,148.80, making it one of the significant anti-smuggling interceptions recorded in the region this year.
The driver of the vehicle was immediately informed of his constitutional rights in a language he fully understood before being taken to the police station for proper documentation and further investigation.
Meanwhile, the confiscated cigarettes were turned over to the Bureau of Customs, which will undertake the necessary legal and administrative procedures regarding the disposition of the seized goods.
Strengthening Anti-Smuggling Efforts
The PNP emphasized that the operation forms part of its continuing efforts to combat economic offenses and illicit trade, which pose serious challenges to lawful commerce and government revenue collection.
Police officials noted that anti-smuggling operations are crucial not only in enforcing the law but also in protecting legitimate businesses that comply with tax regulations and legal importation requirements.
The operation also reflects the PNP’s commitment to its Focused Agenda, particularly in enhancing operational effectiveness through intelligence-driven policing, inter-agency coordination, and strategic law enforcement initiatives.
Authorities said such efforts support the broader governance and economic development priorities of the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., particularly in strengthening revenue generation and ensuring a fair business environment.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. lauded the operating units and partner agencies for their vigilance and professionalism, stressing the importance of collaboration among law enforcement institutions in combating illicit trade.
“Ang ganitong mga operasyon ay patunay na epektibo ang pagtutulungan ng ating mga law enforcement agencies. Hindi lamang natin pinoprotektahan ang batas, kundi pati na rin ang mga negosyong sumusunod sa tamang proseso at ang kita ng pamahalaan na para sa kapakinabangan ng ating mamamayan,” Nartatez said.
He further underscored the need to ensure that police operations are carried out in accordance with legal procedures while respecting the rights of all individuals involved.
“Our personnel remain committed to carrying out their duties professionally, transparently, and within the bounds of the law. We will continue working closely with our partner agencies to prevent the entry and movement of illicit goods while ensuring that all actions are undertaken with accountability and respect for due process,” he added.
