TUKURAN, Zamboanga del Sur — A joint law enforcement operation by the Philippine National Police (PNP) led to the seizure of more than ₱3.18 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and the arrest of four male suspects in the early hours of January 26, 2026, authorities said.

Police identified the operation as a coordinated effort of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Regional Field Unit 9, CIDG Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Field Unit, and the Provincial Intelligence Team–Regional Intelligence Unit 9, in coordination with the Tukuran Municipal Police Station. The sting was carried out at exactly 1:05 a.m. in Barangay Camanga, Tukuran.

According to initial reports, operatives intercepted two vehicles and caught the suspects in the act of unloading smuggled cigarettes. Seized during the operation were one Starex vehicle and one Nissan Urvan, both allegedly used to transport the illegal goods.

Authorities confiscated a total of 50 assorted master cases and 450 reams of smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated market value of ₱3,181,835.00. The suspects, whose identities were withheld pending formal charges, are all residents of Pagadian City, police said.

“All confiscated pieces of evidence are now under the custody of CIDG RSOT RFU9 for documentation and the filing of appropriate charges,” the PNP stated, adding that cases related to smuggling and violations of customs and tax laws are being prepared against the arrested individuals.

Police officials said the successful operation underscores the PNP’s intensified campaign against smuggling and other illegal activities, particularly the illicit trade of cigarettes that deprives the government of billions of pesos in revenue and undermines legitimate businesses.

Authorities vowed to sustain intelligence-driven operations across Zamboanga Peninsula to curb the entry and distribution of contraband goods, warning smugglers that coordinated enforcement actions will continue “anytime and anywhere.”
