TUKURAN, Zamboanga del Sur — Authorities arrested a 26-year-old laborer from Zamboanga City and seized more than ₱3.3 million worth of smuggled and untaxed cigarettes during an entrapment operation in Barangay Camanga, Tukuran, late Sunday night, February 8, 2026.
The suspect was apprehended at around 11:00 p.m. in Purok Gumamela following a coordinated buy-bust operation led by the Zamboanga del Sur Police Intelligence Unit (ZSPIU), Regional Intelligence Division 9 (RID9-RA ZDS), 902nd Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 9 (RMFB9), Maritime Police Station–ZDS, and the Tukuran Municipal Police Station, in partnership with the Tukuran Health Office.
Police said the operation was launched after receiving intelligence reports on the illegal distribution of smuggled and untaxed cigarettes in the area. Operatives posed as buyers, leading to the successful arrest of the suspect during the transaction.
Confiscated from the suspect were several master cases of cigarettes of various brands believed to be smuggled into the country without proper documentation and tax payment. Also recovered were one marked ₱1,000 bill used in the entrapment and 599 pieces of ₱1,000 boodle money.
Authorities estimated the total market value of the seized items at ₱3,323,400.
The suspect and the recovered evidence were immediately brought to the Tukuran Municipal Police Station for documentation and proper disposition.
According to police officials, the suspect will face charges for violations of Republic Act 10643, or the Graphic Health Warning Signs Law, which mandates proper health warnings on tobacco products, and Republic Act 8424, or the Tax Reform Act of 1997, which penalizes the illegal sale and distribution of untaxed goods.
Law enforcement authorities stressed that the operation forms part of the government’s intensified campaign against smuggling and illicit trade, which deprives the government of billions of pesos in tax revenues and poses serious risks to public health.
“The confiscation of these illegal cigarettes is a major step in protecting consumers and ensuring that businesses comply with tax and health regulations,” a police official said.
The police also urged the public to report suspicious activities related to illegal trade, emphasizing that community cooperation remains vital in curbing smuggling and other forms of economic sabotage in the province.
Further investigation is ongoing to determine whether the suspect is part of a larger syndicate involved in the distribution of smuggled tobacco products in Zamboanga Peninsula and nearby areas.
