LABANGAN, Zamboanga del Sur — A potentially escalating family and community conflict stemming from a deadly shooting incident was peacefully resolved through a successful community-based conflict settlement initiative led by local government officials, security forces, Bangsamoro leaders, and community stakeholders on June 7, 2026.

The peace settlement was held at the Municipal Hall of Labangan and was facilitated through the collaborative efforts of the 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion under the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division of the Philippine Army, alongside local government officials and various peacebuilding partners.
The conflict-resolution initiative brought together key stakeholders, including Municipal Vice Mayor Hon. Sete Balimbingan, Lt. Col. Rolando E. Vargas Jr., Commanding Officer of the 53rd Infantry Battalion, Mustapha Piang of the Provincial Subanen and Muslim Affairs Office, Police Major Marlon Mangan-Nay, Chief of Police of Labangan Municipal Police Station, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, Bangsamoro elders, barangay officials, and representatives from the affected communities.
The settlement stemmed from a tragic shooting incident that occurred on May 26, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The incident raised concerns among local authorities and community leaders over the possibility of retaliatory actions and the escalation of tensions between the families and groups involved.
Recognizing the urgency of preventing further violence, government authorities, security forces, and traditional community leaders initiated a series of consultations, dialogues, and mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation and fostering understanding among the parties concerned.
Through the RIDO or clan-conflict settlement process, the parties were given an avenue to air grievances, address misunderstandings, and seek reconciliation through peaceful and culturally sensitive mechanisms. The process emphasized mutual respect, accountability, and the preservation of harmony within the community.
The successful resolution of the dispute was hailed as a significant achievement in Labangan’s ongoing peacebuilding efforts and a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative conflict-resolution strategies involving both government institutions and traditional leadership structures.
Officials underscored the importance of community participation, respect for cultural traditions, and the active engagement of local leaders in preventing violence and sustaining peace in conflict-affected areas.
Lt. Col. Vargas reaffirmed the commitment of the 53rd Infantry Battalion to support peace and development initiatives across its area of responsibility, emphasizing that lasting peace can only be achieved through cooperation among communities, local government units, and security sectors.
The Philippine Army also highlighted the settlement as a model of how dialogue and collective action can effectively address long-standing disputes and prevent further bloodshed.
Community leaders expressed hope that the agreement would strengthen relationships among the affected families and serve as an example for future conflict-resolution efforts in the province.
The successful RIDO/Community-Based Conflict Settlement stands as a powerful reminder that unity, understanding, and mutual respect remain vital foundations for lasting peace and stability. As Labangan continues to advance its peacebuilding agenda, stakeholders vowed to sustain collaborative efforts to ensure a safer, more harmonious, and progressive future for all residents of Zamboanga del Sur.
