Zamboanga City — A major shift in security operations unfolded Friday, April 10, as the Joint Task Force Zampelan (JTF Zampelan), under the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division, formally assumed operational responsibility over the city, signaling a renewed push by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to strengthen stability in Western Mindanao.

The transition saw the relief of the 1st Marine Rifle Battalion, which had been previously deployed in the area, and its replacement by a battalion-sized Philippine Army contingent under the 102nd Infantry Brigade. The incoming force is bolstered with specialized units, including K9 teams, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) assets, armored vehicles, and sea patrol capabilities—indicating a comprehensive and multi-layered security approach.

Military officials emphasized that the newly deployed troops are not ordinary reinforcements but battle-hardened veterans, many of whom played key roles in critical operations in Basilan and historic conflicts such as the Zamboanga Siege and the Marawi Siege. Their combat experience is seen as a vital asset in addressing evolving security threats and maintaining peace in the region.

Command of JTF Zampelan has been entrusted to Brigadier General Samuel Yunque, a decorated military leader and veteran of both the Zamboanga and Marawi sieges. His appointment underscores the AFP’s intent to place experienced leadership at the forefront of its operations in one of Mindanao’s most strategically significant urban centers.

The formal turnover ceremony was presided over by Brigadier General Aldrin S. Annani, Deputy Commander for External Defense Operations of Western Mindanao Command. In his address, Annani highlighted the sacrifices required of soldiers and the critical importance of their mission.

“Deployment is the ultimate test of a soldier’s resolve. It calls us to leave the comfort of our homes and the company of our families in answer to a higher calling—the protection of the Filipino people,” he said.

Local officials expressed strong support for the transition. Mayor Khymer Adan T. Olaso welcomed the Philippine Army contingent and stressed the importance of unity among security forces, government agencies, and the community in sustaining peace and order. He also extended gratitude to the outgoing Marine battalion for its service, noting that continued collaboration remains key to the city’s security success.

The assumption of responsibility by JTF Zampelan marks a new phase in the AFP’s broader campaign to secure Western Mindanao, a region long challenged by insurgency, terrorism, and other security threats. With enhanced capabilities, experienced leadership, and strengthened inter-agency coordination, authorities aim to ensure that Zamboanga City remains not only secure but also resilient and conducive to economic growth.

Military officials affirmed that the transition is part of a proactive strategy to adapt to changing security dynamics, reinforcing the AFP’s commitment to protect communities and uphold stability across Mindanao.
