ZAMBOANGA CITY — A 9-year-old boy was bitten on the neck by a pet monkey in Barangay Capisan, Zamboanga City, on Thursday afternoon, October 16, 2025.

According to the initial report, the child was playing near a neighbor’s chained monkey when it suddenly jumped and bit him on the neck. The victim was immediately brought to a nearby health facility for medical treatment.

Barangay Kagawad Leo Jay Atilano confirmed that this was not the first time the same monkey had attacked a person. Several residents had reportedly been bitten in previous incidents.

Following the latest attack, the Barangay Council coordinated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the immediate rescue of the monkey to prevent further injuries. The animal was successfully turned over to the DENR yesterday, October 21, 2025.

The Barangay also provided financial assistance to the victim and assured that the child is now in stable condition.

Authorities remind the public that keeping wild animals such as monkeys as pets is prohibited under Republic Act No. 9147 or the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.” Violation of this law can result in penalties, including imprisonment.

Officials emphasize that wild animals are not suitable as domestic pets as they can become aggressive and pose serious risks to humans. The DENR continues to urge the public to report illegal possession or trade of wildlife for everyone’s safety and animal welfare.
